What is an art quilt?

Art quilting uses both modern and traditional quilting techniques to create art objects. Quilters create an art quilt based on their experiences, imagery, and ideas rather than traditional patterns. Art quilts generally hang on the wall, rather than lie on the bed.  To be called a quilt there must be three layers that are connected through all the layers.  This gives much latitude to the materials used.

What are narrative quilts?

A narrative or story quilt is a fabric quilt with pictures and textures that are used to tell a story.  A story quilt is used to tell a story of a moment, an event, or a feeling that is important to the quilter.

What is free motion quilting?

Free-motion quilting is a process used to stitch the three layers of a quilt together using a domestic sewing machine with the feed dogs lowered, with a darning foot installed. The stitching can be made in any direction.  The quilter’s hands move the fabric rather than the machine.
